Pol Pot’s killing machine produced the “ killing fields” for which the film was later named. They savaged an essentially defenseless population already weary of war. The “evils” the Khmer Rouge aspired to destroy included all vestiges of the former governments of Cambodia, city life, private enterprise, the family unit, religion, money, modern medicine and industry, private property, and anything that smacked of foreign influence. His model was the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Their leader, Pol Pot, embraced the most radical versions of class warfare, egalitarianism, and state control. In fact, MacOS received major memory updates in Mavericks and Yosemite that adjusted the way memory is allocated to help make RAM use more efficient. It’s an indicator of potential issues, but some swap memory usage is not uncommon. However, swap used doesn’t always mean something is wrong. It tends to become higher if you have a lot of apps or tabs open at once or are trying to manage other complex processes. Swap memory is more likely to be used when your current memory isn’t enough to efficiently handle all the tasks you are trying to do on MacOS. Traditionally, swap used has a bad reputation since it can indicate RAM problems. The operating system does this by borrowing some space from somewhere else - the startup disk, in this case - and using it to temporarily store some data while the RAM is busy handling other tasks. If I’ve missed your favorite utility or you have other questions, feel free to leave them in the comments.Swap memory is a type of memory that computers use to offload demands on the current RAM. Typically, I will run for multiple days and I tend to reboot my Mac whenever I notice that my swap space is over a quarter or so of my RAM.Īside from the Activity Monitor, there are some great third-party utilities like iStat Menus, Sensei Monitor, Stats, and iPulse that give you this information, and more. That’s just from time and a lack of perfect cleanup as you run without rebooting. ![]() That swap space will grow over time between startups. I’ve got 32 GB of RAM, so I like to make sure I’ve kept 64 GB free on my SSD. There is a rule of thumb/tip about Swap Space: You should keep double the amount of physical memory on your storage free for your system to work well. Why did it feel so fast? Because it would swap in and out of its SSD, making it feel like it had much more RAM. When the MacBook Air debuted, it only had 4 GB of RAM. And what happens when you switch back to that application? It swaps those memory sections back, paging it back in. The term for that is “swap.” You’re swapping elements in your RAM and paging them out to your storage. When your Mac runs out of RAM, it starts to push sections in RAM to your storage. When I’m running intensive applications, like After Effects or DaVinci Resolve, I keep the activity monitor open just to keep an eye on the system’s memory usage. Your memory pressure may momentarily be in the red, but if it happens often, it’s time to buy more RAM or upgrade your system. If it’s red, there’s just not enough RAM. If it’s yellow, your Mac is stressed, and you should start quitting some applications. Generally speaking, if it’s green, you’re good. It’s a summary of how much of your RAM is being used. The list goes on, the day job is back in full effect, and I’ll have to take it one chunk at a time since there is zero momentum. Making the bullets lasers instead? 1 day. Making the asteroids more geometric instead of circles? 1 day. There are still have some things I’d like to do, but I’ve learned through this process that each feature adds about another day of work. Launch went well, except I had a bug where the game would never start. By the next Friday, a week after the demo, I was ready to share it. I took the same Solvable Chunks approach to finish it out. Over the next week I built out a punchlist of all the things I learned I needed. Live demos are always tough, and it’s impossible for me to test 200 simultaneous clients, but it held up and I think people had fun. The demo during the live Shop Talk Show went okay. This has a “ Draw the rest of the owl” feel but everything below was optional. On Friday I used my new found canvas skills to rough out a UI. That feature alone may have secured Code as my editor of choice going forward. You can (re)launch your server by hitting F5 and even setup a debugger to step into objects and functions just like a web inspector. I also learned that VS Code is a really great text editor for building and debugging Node applications. Making them fall from the top was simply a matter of increasing the y value every frame and splicing the asteroid object from the asteroids array when it hit the bottom of the screen. Circles have x, y, and radius attributes. I didn’t know much about drawing in canvas, so my first chunk was learning to draw falling-circle shaped asteroids. See the Pen Global Defense v1: Make asteroids fall by Dave Rupert ( on CodePen. The following is a night-by-night, chunk-by-chunk, breakdown of how I built Global Defense. You can choose to keep iterating, redesign to be something more minimal and timeline efficient, or adjust the timeline. Using prototypes you’ll be able to make better timeline estimates if you do a little bit of the work up front. If you’re working solo, keep a development journal you can reference later. You should now have a better idea of what it would take to finish and if the current design is endangering the timeline.Īt the end of your chunk, share and document your learnings with your team. If by the end of 4 or 8 hours you’re still not finished, that’s okay. Losing momentum means it will be more difficult to jump back into solving complex tasks. Keeping problems small and solvable helps you do this. At all costs you want to keep momentum on a prototype. I have the big idea in mind, but I let those later stages be intentionally vague. Knowing that, over thinking or scoping anything beyond that first or third chunk is futile because what I discover in those early stages will dramatically affect what happens in later stages. When working on a chunk, I’m always aware that a problem can give birth to a myriad of baby problems. Solvable chunks is maybe something we do naturally, but applying a light framework around it has really helped me quickly create and maintain momentum. It’s also the length of a morning or afternoon where you can prototype while pretending to check your email. The 4 hours is relevant because -as a parent- it’s roughly the amount of time I have after my kids go to bed. To me, a solvable chunk is a problem I think I can solve in about 4 hours. Breaking a design or idea into smaller pieces, while maintaining a big picture, allows you to prototype each piece of necessary functionality with the aim to inform your design and timeline. To build the game I broke the project up in to something I call “Solvable Chunks”. As I lay awake staring at the ceiling, I realized I might be able to pull it off. On Friday night Chris Coyier and I were scheduled to do a live Shop Talk Show at Web Design Day in Pittsburgh. ’Twas late Sunday night and I got an idea for a multiplayer HTML5 game using canvas, web sockets, and gyroscopes. When I’m driving I like to be able to control music by voice, unfortunately the TIDAL mobile app has neither native voice control (like Alexa) nor does it integrate with the ‘OK Google’ assistant (like Spotify), leaving it a manual process. Yet when I do a search for just ‘hey boy hey girl’ and click View All I can scroll down and see the track there: The first real bug-bear I have with Tidal is the search facility, it doesn’t appear to do searching based on all parameters in the database.Īs an example, I wanted to search for a new mix of the The Chemical Brothers “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” called the “Kink Extended Edition”, unfortunately a search for ‘hey boy hey girl kink’ yields no results, so I assumed it wasn’t in the library: No search results for ‘Hey boy hey girl kink’ You can play from six devices at the same time if they have the music downloaded and cached offline (so not streaming basically). You can stream music to only one device at a time. Streaming LimitationĪs with Spotify, TIDAL has a limitation when it comes to streaming on multiple devices. As you can see here, there is already a significant number of people requesting this feature from Serato. The only downside of the TIDAL integration at present is that you must be online for it to work which i problematic to say the least, I can understand if you have to connect every 30 days or so to validate your subscription to TIDAL but this is seriously limiting for some venus. When DJs buy a record, they don’t buy a special ‘broadcast’ version for additional rights – nor should that exist with streaming music, after all DJing promotes music with audience members using services like ‘Shazam’ to find out what a song is so they can go and buy it themselves. When I’ve DJ’d at festivals, the festivals would ask for a list of the songs played so appropriate commissions could be paid for the broadcast rights. I cry bullsh*t on this because the burden of payment for transmission lies with the event, venue or broadcaster. I’ve seen many discussions around DRM issues here with people saying that because a DJ is performing, streaming platforms aren’t allowed to link to integrate with professional entertainment tools. This is a fantastic idea and makes great sense. Serato DJ Pro IntegrationĪ big winner for TIDAL here is their integration with the Serato DJ Pro software. On some forums when people have complained about the lack of quality on Spotify and been shot-down by others for not manually setting the quality to ‘high’ rather than ‘auto’ but to my mind, you shouldn’t have to and either ‘auto’ isn’t working properly (I’m generally on a very fast connection) or Spotify best quality is poor compared to TIDAL. This was noticable on both my cheap car stereo and my Sennheiser headphones.
